Vintage 1987 Marilyn Andrews Folk Art Pottery “Gender Politics”
Unusual One-of-a-Kind 2-Piece Canister-Like Psychological Sculpture
Marilyn Andrews (1943-2019) was a highly regarded Massachusetts sculptural potter. Her handmade clay ceramics, like this sculpture, are often surreal.
In this two-piece sculpture — Gender Politics — an everywoman is sitting atop what looks like a lidded jar or crock. She’s wearing a dress, holding a handbag, and her painted legs extend over the edge of the lid. Removing the lid reveals a dimensional fantasy of the woman’s legs, one of which is chained to the inside of the vessel. The exterior of the jar has images of people on all sides, and the inside is painted as well. The sculpture's multiple messages about the human condition make it a great conversation piece.
Artist signed and dated on the underside.

Dimensions are approximate. 10.75 inches tall. 5 inches diameter.
Andrews, a self-taught potter, started creating hand built stoneware pieces in the mid 1970s. She has explained that her focus was "to create an object which embodies an image that can be a useful tool for understanding."
The two pieces will ship in separate boxes within a larger shipping carton. Buyer can reconnect the chain to jar using the clasp.
