A rare Antique Aesthetic Movement tile by Wedgwood "Ye Army/Ye Church", Pattern No. 269 transfer printed in indigo blue on a white ground.

Tile of earthenware transfer-printed, probably designed by Thomas Allan. A four-square design printed in dark blue. In the top half is a scroll-work pattern and a man raising his glass in a tavern to "YE ARMY". In the lower half is a dozing monk at a table and inscribed "YE CHURCH".  Scroll pattern in the other lower part.

Makers mark on reverse 'JOSIAH / WEDGWOOD / & SONS / ETRURIA'

Thomas Allen (1831-1915) was a prolific ceramic painter and designer. Allen studied at Stoke-on-Trent School of Design before working  at Minton. During his time with Minton Allen won a scholarship to study at the School of Design, Marlborough House, London, between 1852-1854. Allen worked for Wedgwood from late 1875/ early 1876, becoming Art  Director in 1880. Under his influence the output and range of Wedgwood wares grew dramatically.
