Very well painted and atmospheric, original watercolour, by the listed London artist Miss Gertrude Peel (fl. 1885 - 1916), painted circa 1890.

Titled "Oh! Forest Green and Fair", depicting a sunlit view through a Larch Wood, the shadows of the tree trunks interspersed with bands of sunlight on the woodland floor. This looks very like the landscape around Hindhead in Surrey and given Peel lived in London would be the nearest location she could find such a view. A fine example of the artist's work.

Signed lower right and with a fragment of the exhibition label on the back board giving the title and the exhibit number as 1. Also with labels form Kemp & Co., frame makers of Pimlico and Chapman Bros. gilders of Chelsea.

Watercolour on heavy wove paper. In the original gilt wood frame with the original gilt mount.

Watercolour in excellent original condition, with good strong colour (see photos). Frame with nicks, scratches and rubbing to the gilding, mount clean (see photos).

Image 51.5cm x 34.5cm, frame 71cm x 55cm.

Gertrude Peel fl. 1885 – 1916

British landscape and flower painter in watercolours.

Miss Gertrude Peel was a London based artist who lived at 76 Edbury Street in Belgravia with her sister Constance. Over a period of 30 years, she exhibited at several of the principal London galleries of her day. These included the Baillie Gallery, The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, the Royal Academy and most frequently at the Dudley Gallery and the Society of Women Artists.

Other than her exhibition record and the two sister’s entry in “Boyle’s Fashionable Court & Country Guide and Town Visiting Directory” there appears to be no further record of her life and works.
