Don McMichael's vivid, realistic portraits of marine mammals communicate his compassionate concern for the sea and man's interaction among the earth's precious marine life. After many years in the United States Coast Guard, where he was in charge of search and rescue stations along the coast of Oregon, McMichael still dives among the sea mammals he paints. It is this close connection with the ocean waters that enables the artist to perfect his detailed realism in painting. He has made dives among the humpback whales in Hawaii, researched and studied the grays along the Oregon and California coastlines, and he has taken part in an Inupiat Eskimo bowhead whale hunt in the Arctic Ocean.

"Being there," says McMichael, "seeing the Arctic, the whales and the hunters all in one scene, together, has only intensified my viewpoint on how complete and timeless this land and its people really are." McMichael has taken part in many international exhibitions with prestigious marine conservation organizations, but one of his favorite things is to spend time in the classroom, sharing his knowledge with students of all ages.
