1700’s British Coin Weight - One Pistol - circulated in UK early 1700's (C537)

Circulating foreign gold coin was prevalent in the UK at this time with French Louis d'Or and Spanish Pistoles both circulating in commerce at 17/6d, compared to a freshly minted Guinea at 21/6d.

Isaac Newton (Master of the Royal Mint) ttested the worn foreign coin and typically found it to be worth 17/1d and emphasised to the Treasury secretary that such coin was merely bullion and not official coin of the realm. A resulting Proclamation of 5th February 1701 brought the value of the foreign coin down to 17 Shillings, with the consequence that many were sent to the Mint for converting to current coin, and some £1,400,000 worth accounted for more or less the whole coinage of 1701 and 1702.

Ebay seem to be losing my second images, sometimes even the first!  Everything should have a heads and tails if it's a coin.  If you see anything that looks like it's missing an image or two, please let me know and I'll sort it.

Thnx!

Just to be clear, all my images are done on a not-very-good iPhone camera - in fact I list everything from start to finish on my phone.  As such, the images will be basic and certainly not enhanced in any way (more like de-hanced on my phone!!).

Post Office Posting Days:

Due to this horrible worldwide pandemic, my Post Office ALWAYS has at least a 20 minute queue.  So in order to keep everyone safe, I think it best that I only post on TUESDAYS and FRIDAYS (their quietest days).  Thank you for your patience and understanding during these worrying times.

Hi.  If you need a length, width or height and I haven't already given it in this auction description, and the ruler is not clear due to angle of photography, please do message me before you buy and I will get back to you.
