How to use bird netting to protect fruit trees

Secure your bird netting for the best results. Securing netting also prevents damage, extends its working life and avoids wildlife entanglements.

You can easily secure the netting to a frame, trellis or other structure. Otherwise, you can secure it to the plant itself.

A netting frame can be permanent, temporary or portable. When not in use, the netting from permanent and temporary frames can be stored to extend its life. In a small, seasonal orchard, portable frames can be moved from tree to tree, following the harvest and reducing work for the gardener. Furthermore, portable frames should always be anchored to the ground.

When securing netting to a plant, the plant should not be too delicate and the netting needs to be big enough to cover the plant completely and reach the ground on all sides.

We recommend using a broom to pass the netting over a tree without it becoming caught. To do this, bunch the netting on the brush end of the broom and guide it over the plant. Meanwhile, jiggling the broom will release the netting. You can also use the broom from the inside of the netting to ensure it is evenly distributed on all sides. Afterwards, secure the netting by tying it to the trunk of the tree. Pegs or posts can also be uséd but some pest animals may be able to crawl under netting that is not secured to the trunk or a frame.
