DESCRIPTION

- A beautiful and timeless eternity band made by the premier wedding band designer/manufacturer, J.R. Wood & Sons. This ring (estimated circa the early 1900s to 1920s) is modelled in solid 18k white and yellow gold. It features milgrain edges and a continuous embossed orange blossom pattern. This ring would complement an engagement ring or make a lovely addition to your collection.

- Orange blossom has a long-lasting association with Queen Victoria. It began when the Queen married Prince Albert in 1840 and adorned her floral wedding crown with five-petaled citrus buds. It marked the start of an enduring association within the Royal family. And it continued to influence generations of royal brides, who all had orange blossoms as part of the design of their wedding dresses.

- Orange blossom is traditionally linked with marriages because it symbolizes joy, prosperity, innocence, and fertility.

MARKS

- “18 K W” (Note: The letter “W”/the J.R. Wood & Son hallmark is on its side)

- “45”

Some relevant dates:

- Established in 1850 by J.R. Wood in Brooklyn, they made some of the best gold and platinum jewelry of the time

- In the 1890s, they developed the first seamless soldered rings—a modern development at that time

- In the 1920s, their craftsman began to design and manufacture wedding bands and engagement rings that had “carved” designs in exquisite detail

- J.R. Wood & Sons later became ArtCarved and is still in operation today

INSCRIPTION

- The ring has been inscribed with the couple’s initials and their wedding date

- The inscription has faded over the years. My best guess is “J.V. — C.M.J. Feb. 07, 1909”

- Note: While an inscription can provide helpful information in identifying the age of a piece of jewelry, it is not always indicative of when it was made. Since J.R. Wood & Sons began designing and manufacturing wedding bands that had “carved” designs in the 1920s, I suspect the couple may have purchased the ring in the 1920s but added in their original wedding date in 1909 later on. The design of this wedding band also took cues from the Art Deco era

MEASUREMENTS

- Ring size: Approx. 4.75 US standard (Note: The ring is resizable but it is not recommended, as it will impact the integrity of the design and patina)

- Width: Approx. 2.5 mm

- Depth: Approx. 2.1 mm

- Weight: Approx. 3.1 grams

CONDITION

- Overall, the ring is in excellent antique condition but bears signs of wear commensurate with age. Metal surfaces have marks and scratches that one would expect in a piece of this age. These ‘imperfections’ add character to the piece rather than take away from it

- While the milgrain edges have softened over the years, the orange blossom pattern is still very crisp

- There is no visible evidence of a previous repair or resize
