      • Date and Edition: - This is an incredible collection that combined with the condition, is almost certainly unique. I wish I knew more about the history of the set, but it has been lovingly looked after and the binding alone would cost well in excess of £1000. It consists of a publication that began in Oct 1901 produced by "The Foreign Bird Club" with the title "Foreign Bird Notes", 5 issues were published Oct 1901-Feb 1902 (numbered 1-5). This first volume is smaller than the others and measures 11cm x 17cm. Then from March 1902 the magazine was renamed "BIRD NOTES: Being the Journal of the Foreign Bird Club and The National British Bird and Mule Club" With this new title came a new Issue No.1, Issues 1-5 were March-July 1902, then issues 6-11 were issued Sept 1902-Feb 1903. These 14 issues published between Oct 1901 and Feb 1903 make up volume one. The volume has the covers of the issues bound in at the back of the volume. March 1903 and the second volume takes on a new look, it is larger in size and takes the simple title of "Bird Notes" again they took the summer off (only August this time) and there were 11 Issues, again, title pages bound in the back of the book, this seems to be consistent for the first few years. By Volume 6 The title has changed again to "Bird Notes: The Journal of the Foreign Bird Club for the Study of All Species of Birds in Freedom and Captivity, the year still runs from March-Feb (1907-08). Volume 7 once more sees a jump in size increasing from 13cm x 20cm to 15cm x 22.5cm, the number of plates have increased, both photographic and colour. For Volume 8 they finally sink the years up ending with 10 Issues for the year on Dec 1909. Following these first 8 volumes published from 1901-1909, on Jan 1910 they start afresh titling it New Series Volume 1. Again they published 8 volumes from 1910-1917. Then followed in 1918 Volume One Series 3, this set continues to 1924 which is Vol.7 Series 3. This last volume is considerably thinner and there are comments about apologising for delays, the issues are now also bi-monthly, so I suspect that it may have ceased publication. So to sum up, a complete publication from Oct 1901 to end of 1924, all copies are immaculate, including the covers, which are bound in the rear of each volume. 23 volumes in total, Vol 1-8, Vol 1-8 New Series, Vol 1-7 Series 3.
      • Pages: - .
      • Illustrated?: - Yes.
      • Book condition: - 23 volumes bound in leather. The vast majority are immaculate, though some volumes look to have been bound at different times and show different aging. Notably volumes 7 & 8 (1908-09) are showing some wear and rubbing to the spine edges, whether this comes down to just cheaper leather being used, I'm not sure. Many of the issues have a plate inside the front board that states "The Avicultural Society - T.H. Newman Bequest 1944" see photos for further details.
