These infra-red photocell devices are perfect as a gate sensor. The create an Infra red pencil beam between each other and as soon as someone or something blocks the beam the sensor triggers the internal relay to open or close depending how your set the jumper pin.

Although they are most commonly used for electric gates, they can also be used as a beam trip wire so you can hook up a to a door bell or something that will alert you that someone is coming working more effectively than a passive infra red sensor which can be set off by pets.
