One day Buddha Shakyamuni was walking past a pond. Hell was on its soil. Countless sinners cavorted in it.

Among them was a man who had committed many sins in his life such as murder, robbery, arson and looting.

But Shakyamuni also saw a good thing that the man had done: he let a spider that once crossed his path live out of pity and compassion.

In his kindness, Buddha took a spider from the leaf of a lotus blooming on the pond. He lowered a thread from the spider to the bottom of the pond. When the sinful man saw the saving thread, he grabbed it and climbed up it. But since the thread was very long, he had to catch his breath halfway through. The man saw that other sinners were also climbing up the thread beneath him. Fearing and angry that the thread would break, he shouted to the others, "I didn't allow you to climb my thread, so let it go now!"

Oh, that poor man! As soon as it was said, the thread above him broke and the man fell back into hell with all the other sinners and is still suffering immeasurable torment.
