``Usaburo Kokeshi'' utilizes advanced technology and design capabilities to create a variety of character Kokeshi dolls, all of which are made by craftsmen with great care in each stroke.
"Usaburo Kokeshi" has been highly praised in numerous competitions and is loved not only in Japan but also overseas.
Kokeshi dolls originally had a history as toys from the end of the Edo period to the end of the Meiji period, but they began to be sold as souvenirs in hot spring areas in the Tohoku region. When many people hear the word "kokeshi," the first thing they imagine is the shape of the "traditional kokeshi," but the "new kokeshi," which has evolved with the times and is characterized by free expression that is not bound by established frameworks, is a different type of kokeshi. They are called ``creative kokeshi dolls'' because of their rich variety of shapes, colors, and motifs. Among these, we will deliver a variety of ``Usaburo Kokeshi'' from Gunma Prefecture, which is the birthplace of ``Creative Kokeshi'' and boasts the largest production volume in Japan.
The wood used as materials is regularly purchased from mountains within the prefecture, supporting the Satoyama cycle.
Cut the materials, shave them into circles, assemble them, and paint them. Kokeshi doll making involves a total of 13 steps, and is completed using a special machine. The wood used as the material is wood from Gunma Prefecture, and we often use dogwood, which grows well in the water-rich prefecture and has a white base and inconspicuous grain. Other broad-leaved trees such as cherry, zelkova, and chestnut are also often used.
The process of stripping off the bark of fallen leaves and drying them in Gunma's dry winter wind is done by hand by craftsmen. Each Kokeshi doll is carefully made one by one, taking care to avoid cracks and knots caused by water loss, and is truly a work of art created by nature and humans together.
