Rare Francois Hippolyte Lalaisse (1812 - 1884) Hand Colored Engraving estimated around 1853. The piece is hand colored in Crimson, Tan, Blue, Black, Brown and Green and is in very good condition for its age.  The gold guilt framed piece is 18 5/8" High x 20 5/8" Wide with Navy primary beveled mat and gold secondar6.  I would recommend museum conservation for long term preservation on this piece.  The piece was originally framed and sold by famous Antique Equine Art Collector, Mary Lou Walbergh with her notes and sticker on reverse.

On back...

"These exquisite Vernet Mamelukes are engravings done from the original plates in France and are most unusual in that the color appears to be in the plate.... History and art combined in one, as it were, for the Mamelukes were legendary --native North Africans who worked for the French as horse trainers, then rose up and seized whole regiments, taking power for themselves."  Written in the words of Antique Equine Art Collector, Mary Lou Walbergh on the back of this Vintage framed and matted piece.

Engraving is in Excellent condition.
