Grant Speed (1930-2011) -  the esteemed Western sculptor, was born in 1930 in San Angelo, Texas, revealing early passions for horsemanship and rodeo that eventually intertwined with his artistic journey. Despite a youth steeped in cowboy life, Speed's latent artistic ambitions surfaced when he created his first sculpture using his daughter's school clay. This clandestine artistic pursuit eventually led him to attend art classes at Brigham Young University, marking the inception of his dedication to sculpture. Juggling a career as an elementary school teacher with his artistic endeavors, Speed's relentless commitment to his craft became evident as he toiled through sleepless nights. In 1965, he joined "The Cowboy Artists of America," and his career gained momentum, marked by notable commissions like the Charles Goodnight sculpture for the Pan Handle Plains Museum and the Buddy Holly monument in Lubbock. Speed's artistic style, coined as "Loose Realism," is a testament to his passion for capturing the essence of his subjects, often depicting the dynamic relationship between man and nature. Today, residing in Lindon, Utah, Grant Speed's legacy extends beyond his art, earning recognition not only for his craftsmanship but also for his deep character and quiet faith.
