Lieutenant Dennis Patten Galpin DFM
He was educated in London and joined National Provincial bank in 1935. Shortly before the outbreak of war he joined the 139th Army Field Regiment RA TA. The Regiment saw service in France and Belgium and he managed to return in one piece. After a consider lapse of time he sought to join the RAF and was accepted. In 1942 he joined the Glider Pilot Regiment and passed his flying training. His first operation was flying Horsa's from Portneath in Cornwall to North Africa. In July 1943 he arrived at E Strip Kairoun two days before the Sicily operation in which he carried a platoon of the South Staffordshire Regiment to the bridge at Syracuse. He was a staff sergeant at the time and was awarded the DFM for his part in the proceedings. Following the return of the Regiment to the UK he stayed with the Independent Squadron in North Africa and Italy taking part in the operations to Southern France and Greece.
After the war he rejoined the National Provincial Bank until his retirement in 1978.
