This is a very rare and possibly unrecorded and what must be one of the earliest known c1837-40s vintage toothpaste pot lids with original base,It is manufactured by A.ROWLAND&SONS Hatton Garden London and is entitled ROWLANDS’ ODONTO or Pearl Dentifrice for preserving the teeth and gums a pure fragrant powder from oriental herbs 2s9d Per Box which has been hand made/turned out of a solid piece of light coloured Noxwood.Around the paper side label it states:This powder is a compound of the choicest and most recherche ingredients of the Oriental Herbal of inestimable value in the preservation of health and beauty of the teeth and gums.It eradicates Tartar preserves a pearl like whiteness to the teeth.Scurvy is by its use eradicated from the gums, and a healthy action induced so that the teeth if loose are rendered firm in their sockets.Purity and sweetness of the breath are not the least of its important consequences, it’s invaluable properties have obtained the patronage of Royalty and the Aristocracy of Great Britain and the whole civilised world.To prevent fraud …The annexed Government stamp bears the name and address of the Proprietors engraved by desire of Her Majesty’s Honourable Commissioners of Stamps.All others are Spurious Imitations!!.It even still contains some of its original white tooth powder contents!.It is in an excellent condition for something that is approaching 184 years old and it’s measurements are 7.1cm in diameter x 3.7cm deep.(p.s.A Rowland&Son 20 Hatton Garden perfumers and medicine venders).
