FRENCH LIGHT CAVALRY GENERAL OFFICERS SWORD NAPOLEONIC SABRE A LA MARENGO
A fine example of a beautifully crafted Napoleonic General Officer’s light cavalry sabre complete with brass scabbard.
Complete and in good un-touched condition.
Blade in good
condition with light staining, but no pitting.
At least 75%
of the original bluing remains on both sides of the blade, just a little
faded.
The bluing goes from the hilt to 1/3rd up the blades length. Traces of the bluing still visible along the spine of the blade.
Blade is
curved with a single fuller each side & a back edge running 8” from the
tip.
The blade
engravings with motifs are highlighted with gold inlay.
The blade is
in good condition with no chips or nicks.
The brass hilt is ornate in the extreme & of a rarely found form. It is a style known as “the Marengo Style” after the famous battle on the 14th June 1800.
It still has
traces of the original gold gilding.
The grip is
made from ebony with fine detailed checkering.
The
hilt/knuckle guard is slightly loose, but the grip is tight and hardly
noticeable.
The brass scabbard is complete & solid with no splits.
It does have
a crease on both sides, perhaps caused by a carriage door being closed on it.
The scabbard
does also have some minor dings on its lower forward edge from combat use.
The hanger
rings are supported by mounts engraved with multiple small flowers &
diagonal banding.
Blade fits
snug in the scabbard.
Overall sword/scabbard length = 40.15”, (1020mm)
Blade length
= 33.14”, (842mm)
Blade width
at ricasso = 1.220”, (31mm)
Blade
thickness at ricasso = .354”, (9mm)
Blade tapers
to a very deadly & very sharp point.
A great piece of Napoleonic history.
