THIS LAST ONE IS IN DREADFUL OUTER CONDITION – TATTY WITH BITS HANGING OFF AND SEVERAL INSCRIPTIONS ON FLYLEAF, ONE CROSSED OUT. THE SPINE IS SO DISCOLORED, IT IS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT COLOR, WITH ALL ORIGINAL PIGMENT DESTROYED. PERSONALLY, I’D DONATE THIS TO A CHARITY SHOP RATHER THAN ASK A FULL MARKET PRICE FOR IT –THE GRADE WOULD BETTER BE “ACCEPTABLE”. I’D ONLY OFFER IT FOR SALE IF I COULD NOT FIND A COPY ONLINE. AT LEAST THE SELLER PROVIDES PHOTOS OF THE ACTUAL ITEM.

This book (see photos) seems to have been constantly in print since it was first published in 1890, going through several editions, mainly by Cassell, but lately (2022) by Legare Street Press.(£28.15). The one offered here is the hardback 1900 fourth printing of the second edition. It has a green ink presentation inscription on the flyleaf dated 1902. The main fault is that the tissue guard to the illustration between pages 48/49 is missing. Other than that, it is in good, complete condition with some foxing internally and a degree of grubbiness to the outside. I don’t think this was issued with a dustjacket and may not have spent much time on a bookshelf, though the title lettering on the spine is not quite as bright as the front cover. I think it may have spent time on a mantlepiece as the top is darker than the base. It is bound in green boards embossed on the back with the publishers logo and embossed on the spine and front with the title and illustration which have been gilt in gold-color metal leaf. There are signs of wear on the leading corners, but the top and bottom of the spine have minimal rubbing and are fully intact.

Obviously a classic work which has been constantly available for a century and a quarter, a “print on demand” (stock photo) is advertised on Abebooks for the odd prices of £8.61, £9.67 or £28.15 (same publisher), so careful with the clicking!. The author died in 1928, so any new edition after that will have additions or alterations not written by him. I mention this as this 1900 version has a reference to the (happily false) extinction of the bearded tit due to the exceptional harsh winter of 1894, the author writing from his own observations. In 1896, the enlarged 2nd edition was released, of which this is the4th printing.
