I would assume the remote-control batteries are too old to work.

NOTE: PUTTING IN DEFECTIVE VHS TAPES TO RECORD TO DVD WILL DAMAGE THE UNIT. MAKE SURE YOUR VHS TAPES ARE IN GOOD CONDITION.
