This intact and almost working Magnecord 728-4 was purchased new ca. 1963-4 by its original owner, a classical musician who maintained it carefully until a year or longer before his death in August 2020. Now, it wants to function, but the motors need cleaning and lubrication. All three of the motors work and the vacuum tube electronics as well. The heads are in very good condition. This model has a reputation for fabulously lush, "big" sound.

For those who are unfamiliar with Magnecord and its number codes, this model (728-4) is a 2-track (half-track) stereo machine that runs at 15 ips and 7-1/2 ips and that accepts 10" reels as well as 7" reels.  There are three heads (erase, record, and playback) as well as space for a second playback head (a second 2-track head or possibly a 4-track head or even a mono full-track head). When the 728 machine was supplied with four 2-track heads, it was a 728-44.  When it was supplied without a case, it was a 728-4x or 728-44x. It was also sold in a 4-track (quarter-track) version with model numbers 728-8, 728-8x, 728-88, and 728-88x.  It always has three motors: capstan and a motor for each reel. Please see the pictures.

The tube electronics include balanced microphone preamps and playback preamps. A set of RCA jacks have been added for convenience of accessing outputs and high-level inputs. The original screw-terminal block remains beneath the added RCA jacks (show in the pictures).

The machine in its case weighs 61 pounds.  Packaged for shipment, it will weigh about 69 pounds. Included are 2 NAB hubs for 10" reels, the original power cord (should be replaced), owner's manual, correspondence between the owner and Magnecord regarding bias setting for Scotch 111 vs 201 tape, equalization, and capstan lubrication, and a few other documents filed in the manual. The machine is sold as-is for the family of its owner. No returns, especially because of its weight. Pickup in Richmond, Virginia, is encouraged.
