This lovely little box was created ca. 1875-1885 using bits of richly carved oak from the 1600's and 1700's and solid brass hinges of the late 1800's.  Measuring 5 1/2" tall x 6 1/4" deep x 22" wide, the top features an elaborate scene of putti playing musical instruments and riding a lion approching a semi-nude Goddess who presents a giant chalice.  The front of the box boasts foliate meanders framing two love birds and a quiver of arrows while the sides have pseudo relief sylized designs.  The variation in carving styles suggests the carvings had severall origins and all carved panels have richly textured punch-carved backgrounds in the typical 17th c. manner.  It appears the cabinet maker made a mistake hinging the lid and patched in his mortises with oak as seen on the underside.  A most decorative and historical box, it has expected wear and some shrinkage cracks and splits.  You will note the odor of boiled lindseed oil fram a recent application of the same.
