This facsimile etching which has been faithfully reproduced from an original etching from 1924 is unusual in that it displays Norman Lindsay’s use of two mediums to complete the image – etching and aquatint. Lindsay’s mastery of intaglio printing methods is evident here in his ability to blend the two techniques successfully.

“The Black Hat” also recalls Norman Lindsay’s love of swash-buckling tales of pirates and sea adventures.

Lindsay held a fascination for the ocean & several of his other etchings feature pirates, mermaids and galleons of the sea. He was particularly fascinated with the ancient tale of the Lost City of Atlantis and would talk for hours on end about the city.

The Art Gallery of New South Wales holds edition no. 35 of the original etching of “The Black Hat”. During Lindsay’s lifetime “The Black Hat” was widely exhibited in Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney.
