Hello friends,

This is a new Davis Brothers knife, a Custom #1 Chip Carving, Hobby and Detail Knife. This pattern has a straight edge, and a rounded (sheepsfoot) nose, designed for popping out chips with less risk of breakage. I made this one  with a special lightly spalted Holly handle, making a really comfortable and handy combination. This knife was hand forged by a carver, for carvers., right here on the Pacific Northwest Coast.  Davis Bros., well known for high quality hand forged NW Coast style woodcarving tools, will make a limited number of some favorites.  We make a wide selection of Crook or Crooked knives, Detail knives and Hook knives, as well as Chip Carving and Whittling knives.  Detail knives  are used in accompaniment with crook knives, as well as chip carving and other  stock removal knives.

SAFETY FIRST! : This blade is extremely sharp. Please take care when removing from package.  Always be aware of where  you are cutting, and do not put hands, fingers or other parts of your body in the path of the blade.  Always wear a cut-resistant carving glove on the hand not holding the knife.  And please keep this knife safely away from children.

WORKMANSHIP:  Each knife is unique and hand crafted, with no automated processes used in the more than 30 machining, forging and woodworking tasks for each one.  Some very fine tool marks may be visible on the knives. I do not attain absolute machine-like perfection, but strive to combine art, beauty and utility.  The look and feel of this tool when held is beautiful, smooth, and inspires the work at hand.

BLADE: It was made using 1095 high carbon blade steel, ground to shape then forged, refined and hardened.  It  was then tempered to keep a durable, keen edge and is extremely sharp. The blade profile has a straight cutting edge which makes it relatively easy to sharpen. The spine has a taper towards the front that enables finer work.

HANDLE: For many years we have have saved aside wood with special character and can offer unusual, beautiful and unique handles. This one is lightlySpalted Holly from a tree that grew in a friend's yard. It lay on the ground just long enough to develop striking spalted dark patterns while retaining it's hardness and strength, for a truly outstanding look. Holly is tough and hard combined with beauty, and takes a velvety finish. This shape is very comfortable in your hand and works in harmony with the blade shape to make a great knife.   It is finished with hand rubbed natural Shellac and Carnauba Wax.

CONSTRUCTION:  This knife is 7" overall, with a 1 5/8" long blade, that has a 1 1/4" cutting edge, and is 7/16" wide before tapering to a point.  The cutting edge is straight, with a curved and tapering spine and with a rounded "sheepsfoot" point for popping out chips.  The blade is set with epoxy and further secured with two bronze rivets.

CARVING CHARACTERISTICS: This blade is great for creation and cleanup of chip carving work and stop cuts as well as roughing out carvings. It is also excellent for details. The straight edge enables precise cuts while incising and slicing, and is superior in making even cuts, like those for notching, joint work, planing, etc. The taper along the back of the blade and rounded tip are shaped to help prevent tip breakage while chip carving . With a double bevel edge, this knife can be used with either hand. The blade has plenty of strength for these tasks, but should not be used for prying to preserve the tip.
