World
Radio Laboratories (WRL) Globe Scout Model 680-A HF and six-meter transmitter
for restoration. It has been re-capped and
the power cord was replaced with a 3-wire grounded cord. Looks like a few resistors were also
replaced. Tested and working. Front panel is in decent condition – probably
nicer than the average ones that you see.
Original knobs. Someone did a
quickie repaint job on the cabinet and did not do any prep work. It should be sanded, primed and
repainted. There is also a dent in the upper
front right corner which should not be a problem to straighten. There is also a hole plug on the right side
that has a plug in it. I have no idea
what the hole was used for as there is nothing to adjust inside that would be
assessible. I have provided photos from
all angles, plus photos of the top and bottom of the chassis, along with the
transmitter in operation.
As
stated earlier, the power supply has had the electrolytic capacitors replaced,
along with some resistors. I may have done it differently, but it looks
like good-quality components were used and it does work. I would also put a modern strain relief where
the new power cord goes through the chassis.
Included is a nice comb-bound copy of the Globe Scout 680 manual. As I understand it, the only difference between
the 680 and 680-A, other than the cabinet and front panel, is that the A model
has one component added - a 70 pf cap across the 6M output link.
I
do my best to test everything I list and this transmitter is no exception. Power output on 80 and 40 meters is about 40
watts, decreasing to about 20 watts on 10 meters. Photos show the output on each band on CW,
with the last photo showing operation on 40 meter AM. I did not test the unit on 6-meters as I did
not have a crystal handy.
While
I have described this transmitter as accurately as possible, please note that
vintage tube radio equipment is best enjoyed by those with an understanding of
electronics and the ability/equipment to work on them. This unit is over 60 years old and may
require replacement of some components to get it working to original factory
specs. For this reason, I’m listing this
radio for “parts or not working” per eBay rules which pretty much state that an
item has to be functioning like new to be classified as “used.” This unit also has potentially dangerous
voltages present and only an experienced and qualified person should attempt
any repairs.
Sold
“as is” but guaranteed to be as described.
