The Canadian Olympic was built as a self-unloading bulk carrier for Upper Lakes Shipping in 1976. The Olympic was float launched on May 24, 1976, being christened on October 2. She sailed on her maiden voyage on November 28, 1976, bound for Conneaut, Ohio, to load coal.

In February 2011, Algoma Central Corporation purchased Upper Lakes Shipping and their fleet. The Canadian Olympic was renamed Algoma Olympic in April 2011.

She continued to be an active carrier for Algoma Central Corporation. The Algoma Olympic laid up in late 2017 at Hamilton, Ontario, with a storage load for the winter.

She was not able to reach her final destination due to heavy ice in the St. Lawrence Seaway. In early April 2018, she sailed for Quebec City to unload, then lay up at Montreal to await a tow overseas for Scrapping.

The Algoma Olympic was towed out of Montreal on May 9, 2018, with her name shortened to Oma, bound for Aliaga, Turkey, for scrapping.
