Very cool vintage majolica ceramic pitcher made by the Arthur Wood factory of England. There is both an incised and a printed Wood mark on the bottom, and I think they date this piece to about the 1930s. This piece has a glossy brown majolica glaze which turns to beige and black in various areas. It is decorated with embossed scenes from the 19th century comic poem about a man on a runaway horse, "The Diverting History of John Gilpin," by William Cowper, including the verse "Stop, Stop, John Gilpin! Here's the house!" and an awesome horse-head handle. This pitcher measures 9 1/2" tall to the highest point (the horse head) and about 8 1/4" from spout to handle. It's in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or glaze issues.
