Dr. Samuel A. Mudd House

Wood Relic

Own an Authentic Piece of wood from Dr. Mudd’s Home

Where John Wilkes Booth was Treated.

Dr. Samuel A. Mudd was given St. Catherine, his home and plantation in Charles Co. Maryland, by his father Thomas Mudd. It was on the occasion of his marriage and graduation from Baltimore Medical College around 1857. It was here on the morning of Apr. 15, 1865 that Dr. Mudd assisted Abraham Lincoln assassin, John Wilkes Booth, by setting his broken leg, facilitating his escape. Dr. Mudd was sentenced to prison for the part he played and was subsequently pardoned by Pres. Andrew Johnson in 1869. He died in 1883.

Dr. Mudd’s home remained in the family and in 1974 was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. It opened as a museum in 1983. This piece of lath wood was removed during the restoration and was sold as a souvenir in the museum in the 1980s. The small piece of wood on the front of this display was cut from the original larger piece that was sold as a souvenir.

The first image on ebay shows the display card with the actual wood attached above the image of Dr. Mudd’s house as it looked in 1901. Samuel Mudd’s image is on the left. The second ebay image shows the back of the display with an IMAGE of the original piece of wood with stamped label.  It also has the information about the house and wood.

The actual piece of wood is about ½  inch long and is mounted on a 5 x 7 inch descriptive COA display that can easily be framed. Each piece of wood will vary slightly depending on how it was cut from the original larger piece. The display is protected by a stiff plastic protector. The front image is an early view of the Dr. Mudd’s house with the wood mounted above. The back has a brief history of the home.

This would look great matted and framed and would make a very special gift for anyone with an interest in history!
