USMC Recruit Depot San Diego Early 1950s 2nd Battalion Boot Camp

Platoons 201 & 202 Very Heavily Illustrated Graduation Book

This is a fine example of MARINE CORPS DEPOT SECOND BATTALION Platoons 201 and 202.. The heavily illustrated graduation book probably dates to 1953, when Marine heroes Major General John T. Walker was the Commanding General and Brigadier General William J. Whaling was the Deputy Commander.

The book has an illustrated history of the San Diego Marine Corps Recruit Depot, pictures of recruits from processing and their first haircut, to shelter tent pitching and physical training, barracks life and mess duty, rifle training and firing, final inspection and graduation. Best of all, the many, many pictures show the Marines still dressed in old WW2 era herringbone twill utilities, training with all the World War II 782 gear and equipment. The Marines’ Hymn is inside the back cover.

There are pictures of 165 Marines in the training battalion along with their immediate officers and enlisted men. The last date we can find in the book is 1952 and the commanding officers and NCOs at the Recruit Depot in San Diego, California were World War II veterans, two of them Navy Cross recipients! probably dated 1953.

The 9 x 12 inch hardcover book has red leatherette covers with gold blocking on the front cover. The pages are not numbered. Published by Albert Love Enterprises in Atlanta, GA.
