For sale is a beautiful carved alabaster and marble bust
sculpture that has been in my family for several generations. It is most likely
turn of the century. The sculpture is of Jeanne D'Arc and was possible created by Prof G Bessi (Giuseppe Bessi / 1857-1922). Bessi
was an Italian sculptor from Volterra, Tuscany, a region rich in alabaster
mines. Bessi directed the Volterra School of Art from 1891 to 1910 and remained
a sculpture professor there until his death. His style has been described as
classic / Art Nouveau. Bessi received numerous distinctions during his lifetime
and his work is sold by major international auction houses. This is a heavy and
substantial piece weighing about 24 lbs. Shipped in secure packaging and fully
insured with tracking number. Measurements are roughly 12"W X 6"D X 12"H
including base. This sculpture was professionally cleaned about 10 years ago so I don't know if it was signed at any time. Overall it is in good condition. There are 2-3 minor chips on the front base and slight roughness on the top of one of the side base edge. There is some slight discoloration in one small area of the neck.
Packing and shipping will be done by professionals at $75.
