Geek Fuzz No. 32 is a fire breathing beast. Point to point main PCB with voltage inverter circuit for a true -9V supply, this unit features elusive SFT308 germanium transistors. These high gain, low leakage, ultra low noise devices were used in some Italian made Tone Benders in the late 60's. This batch I actually bought almost four months ago from eastern Europe and the USPS sent them to the wrong state entirely. I eventually gave up on them, until suddenly an unusual envelope arrived from the USPS itself, and there they were. I was blown away when I tested them and they had a near 100% yield. In addition to their amazing consistency from piece to piece, they sound fantastic. There is virtually no unwanted hiss or excess noise, possibly the quietest transistors I've heard in a fuzz, and they are also amazingly tolerant of temperature changes. Most germanium transistors will go wildly out of spec if you merely handle them, these devices only raised in leakage and hfe a negligible amount, but stayed well within their bias range while I squeezed them tightly in my fingers.


As these were featured in a few Tone Benders, I went with a Mark 1, but as the bias is still in the Fuzz Face ball park it still cleansup well which most Tone Benders do not. Other unique features are a German Frakko brand bypass capacitor, .68uf Philips BC input and Philips 341 series output cap. The Geek Switch introduces a .047uf poly cap.


This is the pinnacle of fuzz, the Geek Fuzz. I have taken what I loved about my favorite fuzz pedals and crammed them into one deceptively simple unit. The Geek Fuzz by PFG Pedals produces sparkling cleans, mild crunch, chunky overdrive, and blistering leads, all with your guitar's volume control. The best parts available are combined with sorted, graded, hand tested and sonically matched germanium transistors from my Magic Numbers stash. These are the top 5% of devices that fall within what are widely considered to be the perfect gain readings.


What makes it a "Geek Fuzz?" The Geek switch, an idea I borrowed from the Seymour Duncan Geek Fuzz. This toggle switch switches between a "normal" and "bright" input capacitor. In the left position, only the normal cap is present. To the right, a second smaller cap is introduced in series, reducing low frequencies, tightening up the lower strings, and creating a fuzz tone that doesn't get lost in the mix as many classic fuzzes do.


The other addition is a clean, or smooth control in the middle knob. This is a variable resistor that acts as a second volume knob for your guitar. It can be used as a preset level so your actual volume knob can stay up for easier switching between channels and effects or used in combination with your volume control it can unlock many overdriven and crunchy tones that are otherwise a little finnicky to dial in.
