MEL RAMOS
Large format monograph 30x25cm, 150 illustrations
German English
Mel ramos, nude painter and pop rebel from the very beginning, is considered one of the most important representatives of the Californian version of this style. Similar to his New York colleagues, he began his career as a commercial artist. Like them, he dealt with the everyday myths of his time - with comic strip characters and the synthetic dreams of the advertising world. Since 1963, he developed a preference for popular erotic fantasies about women, from cartoon superheroines to dominatrixes to pin-up girls.
Alongside artists like Tom Wesselmann, Andy Warhol and Allen Jones, Mel Ramos is one of the artists who deals most intensively with the themes of eroticism, sex, fetishism and obsession. Women, women, women or sex, pleasure Mel Ramos drapes his pin-up girls on painted goods in vulgar and vital positioning. At first glance, his work can be mistaken for typical product advertising. However, there is something strangely surreal about the seemingly nonsensical combination of a sun-kissed Californian pin-up girl with a gigantic spark plug in front of a red company emblem (AC Annie). Despite the clarity of the image's structure and the balanced play of forms, Ramos, like many of his fellow Pop Art painters, works with double bases, because his works are expressions of an erotic fantasy that represents a fundamental advertising framework for marketing strategies.
