Original poster - "Columbia Artists Present Lar Lubovitch Dance Company" (1976)

Published by Columbia Artist Management Inc (New York). Designed and printed by Artcraft Lithograph & Printing Co. Inc (New York). Original photograph by Jack Mitchell (1925-2013). Size: 71 x 51 cm. Print Code L76GF. Excellent condition. Subtle horizontal fold not visible from front. Small mark on the black ‘N’.

This stunning poster brings together a monochromatic photograph by of the renowned American photographer Jack Mitchell with a vibrant, almost psychedelic, background. The modern Lar Lubovitch typeface is striking and featured on much of their promotional material in the late 1970s/early 1980s.

Artcraft Lithograph & Printing Co were a prolific designer of Broadway posters and window cards. Lar Lubovitch (b. 1943) is an American choreographer who founded the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company in 1968, based in New York City. The company has performed in all 50 American states as well as in more than 30 countries.

Lar Lubovitch has been cited by The New York Times as one of the best choreographers in the world. In dating this poster, I have referred to the print code (L76GF) but to further support this, beneath the main heading reads a quote from Clive Barnes of the New York Times "Exultation in Dance". Barnes (1927-2008) was a renowned theatre and dance critic who worked for the New York Times until 1977.
