DVD release of the 1978 BBC TV production of this delightful musical. Adapted from the 1963 Broadway production. The Broadway cast LP was long one of our favorites; this TV version is slightly abridged but still wonderful.
She Loves Me is a musical with a book by Joe Masteroff, music by Jerry Bock, and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick.
The musical is the third adaptation of the 1937 play Parfumerie by Hungarian playwright Miklós László, following the 1940 film The Shop Around the Corner and the 1949 musical version In the Good Old Summertime. (It surfaced again as 1998's You've Got Mail). The plot revolves around Budapest shop employees Georg and Amalia, who, despite being consistently at odds with each other at work, are unaware that each is the other's secret pen pal, met through lonely-hearts ads.
The musical premiered on Broadway in 1963 and ran for 301 performances, was produced in the West End in 1964, and received award-winning revivals on each side of the Atlantic in the 1990s (as well as numerous regional productions). Although the original Broadway run was not a financial success, She Loves Me slowly became a cult classic, and the massively successful 2016 Broadway revival became the first Broadway show ever to be live-streamed.
Based on the 1930s Czech play "Parfumerie". It has been translated into movies set in leather goods shops, music shops, and back to a parfumerie. The 1963 version was revived on Broadway in 1993 and again in 2016..... and many times in other venues.
Maraczek's Parfumerie is the setting for this romantic musical about the many entanglements of love. Georg Nowack and his co-workers lead quietly dreary lives as sales assistants in a little boutique in Budapest. That is until Amalia Balash shows up, asking for a job. As soon as she is hired, through no fault of her own, tensions begin to mount inside the store. Just as Georg and Amalia come to hate each other passionately, Georg discovers that Amalia is his secret pen-pal with whom he exchanges "Dear Friend" letters. How can they reconcile their simultaneous love and hate for each other?
