Desvres STANDING
SHEEP- French Faience Geneviève Alizier, Antique, circa 1895
This
is a pottery STANDING SHEEP- a French Faience Desvres Style Antique Figurine of the 19th Century. This DESVRES STANDING SHEEP is
modeled in deep relief; the hand painting, décor and glaze are very well done.
This Antique Sheep Figurine is decorated with stylized accents, and a typical
palette of Geneviève Alizier, including a creamy white background decorated
with blue and white. The STANDING SHEEP stands
upright on four legs; the base feet are unglazed on the underside.
There
is a makers’ mark on the underside, in dark blue script under the glaze, AG,
being that of Geneviève Alizier* of the Desvres region.
The
estimated date is circa 1895.
This
French Faience Antique STANDING SHEEP Figurine by Geneviève Alizier is in very good
condition- noting there is a small 1/8 in. glaze loss on the left side of the belly
(see photos). Otherwise, condition status includes minimal normal
wear and rubbing, glaze losses, firing flaws, crazing and fretting. Overall,
this item is sound, having no chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had
no apparent repairs or restorations. Please see all photos which are a part of
this description. Please note that this item is photographed in natural light;
shadows that may appear as irregularities are not necessarily chips, cracks, or
discoloration.

This
is Geneviève Alizier Desvres style faience, fine country French art pottery.
This style includes production techniques whereby tin glazes and decorations
are applied and worked in stages upon a modeled terra cotta pottery form, and
then fired several times in a kiln.
*ORIGIN
OF THE ‘Ag’ MARK
The
Alizier family, two brothers and a sister, Geneviève, regularly bought several
biscuit items (raw and undecorated pieces) at the Fourmaintraux Courquin Factory,
circa 1875- 1900. The Alizier family decorated the faience items, marked them
with their own signature, and then fire glazed them for the last finish glaze
in the Fourmaintraux Courquin Factory.
