Vtg Deer Buck Scene Hand Knotted Swedish Scandinavian Rya Wool Shag Rug 55 X 30

This is a listing for a very wide and gorgeous woodland inspired vintage woven rya wall hanging featuring a deer family in a winter forest scene You see variations of cream for the snow, blue for the water, green for the trees, a grey/lavender for the winter sky and brown and black for the trees. The colors are VIBRANT!

This piece is hand-knotted on a long piece of wool. On the top there is an envelope for slidding a wooden rod in for mounting. I would have just gone out in the forest and found the perfect stick...bring nature inside!

Rya rugs (Ryas) are the oldest type of Scandinavian carpets. Their origins reach back to the Middle Ages. Primarily they served as mantle and bedding rather than floor covering. Rya's have shaggy woolen piles and usually simple geometric designs. Antique rya rugs were dichromatic (off-white, natural background and black or brown motifs). Later they started appearing in many colors.

Among all types of Scandinavian carpets, Ryas are the easiest to recognize. How? Look for a long pile of about 1 to 3 inches, similar to one of contemporary “shag carpets”. Each separate knot consists of three strands of wool. This gives the rug rich texture and allows for a vast palette of colors.

The piece is in perfect vintage condition, a gorgeous example of retro hand knotted loveliness.
