Original World War II U.S. Marine Corps Pilot in Uniform

Portrait in Beautiful Period Lucite and Aluminum Trench Art Frame

This is a remarkable World War II portrait of a very handsome young United States Marine Corps pilot lieutenant in uniform, in a splendid period multi-piece aluminum, brass and lucite frame with a plinth that measures ¼ x 2-½ x 9-¼ inches.

The aluminum and lucite frame that pivots between two empty and inert .50 caliber brass shells with realistic lucite rounds, measures ¼ x 6 x 7-¼ inches in size and is held together with eight big sturdy looking faux “rivets” that are held by screws from the back side.

The brass shells on each side have a dark patina consistent with its 80 or so year old age and they are stamped on the bottom SL42 and SL43 respectively. The screws that hold the empty and inert brass shells in place on the plinth come through the bottom of the plinth and into holes that once held primers.

A beautiful rare workman-like job, quite likely done aboard an aircraft carrier in the Pacific during World War II. We have no idea what the Marine’s name is or who did the trench art framing, but we have never seen another one just like it. Our photos show the actual item offered for sale.
