Two Hundred New Sheqalim - Zalman Shazar / Girl sitting at a desk, Hebrew letters in the background
New Sheqel Series
Silver/999, 5 grams

During the 1980s in Israel, inflation spiraled out of control at hundreds of percent per annum.
Simultaneously, with the adoption of economic-financial measures to curb inflation, including the printing of a Shekel Banknotes Series, it was decided to print a new series of banknotes to be called the "New Shekel Series" (New Israel Sheqel, shortened to NIS).
On September 4, 1985, the Bank of Israel put into circulation this New Sheqel series.

Three zeros were dropped from the existing denominations, compared to only one zero in the transition from the Lira to the old Sheqel. Thus, 1000 Sheqalim were now one new Sheqel, 5000 Sheqalim became 5 new Sheqalim and 10,000 Sheqalim became 10 new Sheqalim. In addition, a banknote of 50 new Sheqalim was issued.
Once again, in order to ease the radical change in the value of the Sheqel, it was decided to retain a similar appearance to the previous series. Later, new banknotes were issued of 20 new Sheqalim, 100 new Sheqalim and 200 new Sheqalim.
