Personalities: Jiří Šlitr

Commemorative postage stamp

Size : 40 x 23 mm

The drawing represents Jiří Šlitr. The position with his back to the viewer suggests that he was a comedian; it is not usual for the central figure to have his back turned to the viewer, so it must be deliberate humour. The girl wears a costume characteristic of revue, cabaret and tingl-tangl. Jiří Šlitr liked these genres and devoted a considerable part of his work to them. Jonas and Tingl-Tangl was his most important theatre play. The designer drew inspiration from his sixty-five years of work in the aforementioned genres – Jiří Suchý is also a comedian and he and Jiří Šlitr were acting partners for several years.
