Life
drawing by Winifred Eugene BALLARD (1885-1921)Winifred was born Chester 1885,
daughter of Edward George Ballard, mineralogist, Governor Inspector of Mines in
Cornwall circa 1914, living at Trelights near Port Isaac. Winifred studied at
the Chelsea art school under the tutelage of Augustus John and William Orpen,
who together opened the School in 1903, acting as co-principals. Winifred married
Richard Varley in 1919 at Chester Cathedral, and then moved to Hollow Barn
Cottage, Kingston Ridge. She died in 1921, Kingston Lewes, Sussex.
This
drawing comes from the artist’s sketch book, from her time at the Art School. A
hand written label on the sketchbook reads- ‘Drawings by Winifred E Ballard
when under the tuition of John & Orpen’. The sketchbook is signed by the
artist and dated 1907. The last two image show images from the sketchbook inner
covers (not included in the listing). This listing is for a single drawing from
the sketchbook as detailed below.

nude graphite life drawing on thin sand coloured wove paper. Paper is in
reasonable condition with minor handling/creases and other minor
marks/blemishes. Unsigned. Paper measures 22cm x 34cm.
