1878 P VAM 117 Morgan Silver Dollar. Tripled star, closed o in God, alligator eye, doubled LIBERTY and many other interesting features in this Top 100 Morgan VAM and Top 30 1878 Variety coin.

Obverse - Right star 2 is one of the best examples of a tripled star.  The underlying stars are rotated clockwise several degrees.  Alligator eye with front eye doubled and front eyelid tripled.  Doubled LIBERTY shifted right.  Doubled E and R and strongly doubled P in E PLURIBUS.  Doubled left stars 2, 3, and 4, right stars 1, 3, 4, and 5, mouth and upper chin, right inside of ear, tops of cotton leaves, and 18 and 8 in date.  Weak nostril.  Incomplete band in cap.  Thread-like die impression from hair into neck.

Reverse - Closed o in God. Thin vertical bar with fine lines engraved between eagle's right wing and leg.  Vertical bars with fine lines and one diagonal die gouge between eagle's right wing and body.  Die over polished with missing feathers in middle of wings.  Early die state coin without die cracks in reverse legend.

This VAM 117, with its incredibly tripled star and closed o, is much more elusive than its tripled star and broken o counterpart, VAM 141, which is also a Top 100/Top 30 coin.
