Oliver Hogue had been born 1880 Sydney, he son of James Alexander and Jessie Hogue. His father was the MLA for Glebe 1894-1910.

He served with distinction in WW1, with the (dismounted) Light Horse at Gallipoli, and later with the Desert Mounted Corps in Egypt, where he rose to the rank of Major. As 'Trooper Bluegum' he wrote articles for the Sydney Morning Herald subsequently collected in the books Love Letters of an Anzac (London, 1916) and Trooper Bluegum at the Dardanelles (London, 1916). Having survived the War, he died of influenza in a London Hospital in 1919.
Engraved on the back Forest Lodge P S Junior Cricket Comptn 1896/6 Presented to O Hogue. 3 cms wide, pierced design; the front has a belted shield engraved with his monogram. Hallmarked for Birmingham, year unclear, maker Charles Edward Soloman. In good condition. A nice piece of Australiana. See #2 #4
