A very unusual Victorian portrait of some kind of wild boy. Very well executed, signed L Wells and dated to the 1890s, there is a difficult to read inscription on the back.
The two tones of green in the background appear to be deliberately applied rather than retouching.
Condition is reasonably good though the frame has a couple of losses and the picture could definitely do with a clean.
There is also some craquelure.
In my view these issues do not detract from the impact of the picture.
Size in frame 53.4x43cm
