1854 $50 The Farmers & Merchants Bank of Memphis note from Memphis, Tennessee.

Chartered in 1833, It was the first bank to be established in Memphis. Control of the bank was later contested in the courts by several influential citizens who had formerly been friends. Fights broke out outside of the courthouse. Two of the people were killed in the streets in front of the court and two others were wounded. 

The bank made an attempt to reopen in 1854 but the bank's reputation had already been damaged too greatly and several other state banks had opened branches in Memphis by that time. 

This note is PMG Graded About Uncirculated 53 EPQ (Exceptional Paper Quality).
