An elegant Victorian mourning bonnet from the 1800s! The bonnet is made of black crepe with black silk ribbon ties with an attached black mesh veil with silk bands extending off the back of the hat itself in addition to a separate black lace veil. The hat features braided and hand-sewn fabric and structure with several hat pins tucked into it in small and large sizes. It appears the pinheads are made of wood from the wear on one of them. The bonnet features two sets of ostrich feather plumes wired together by hand. These insert into the top of the hat and bellow out over the front elegantly. There is a large floral-patterned lace shawl included it can be worn underneath the hat or as a complete veil covering the top, front, and sides of the hat. The lace shawl does have holes as shown in the photos. There is second silk shawl included with stunning hand-style embroidery all over it in a rose and thorn pattern. This shawl does have some fading and an elegant hand-knotted fringe on the sides of it. The deep red color has small and intricate beading around the entire perimeter. Almost all of this beading is intact minus one small section. The beads are black with an oil slick sheen. All of this comes with a vintage box written on in burgundy marker "Selima Patch Skinner's Born 1837 silk shawls + Church Mourning Bonnet." The box is also marked "Elliot's Janesville Kenosha Watertown Beaver Dam." One corner of the box is unglued and the box has sun fading and discoloration in spots. This would be an amazing addition to any oddities or fashion design collection!
