1828 Georgian Silver Durham Botanical Horticulture Soc Early Cucumber Medal 37g

This is a wonderful and somewhat quirky medal in keeping with the gentrified upper-class Georgians love of forming societies for all sorts of pastimes. It is un-marked sterling silver that tests to a minimum of 925 purity.

The obverse has a depiction of an ancient maiden seated in front of a greenhouse structure. She is holding a grapevine in one hand; behind her os a pedestal with a climbing plant; in front of her is a pineapple growing in an urn. The border legend reads “Botanical and Horticultural Society Instituted 1824.

The reverse has a border legend that reads “Durham Northumberland and Newcastle on Tyne”. The centre has a round garland of flowers, grapes and other produce that encircles:

“Presented

To

Mr H Robson

Gardener

To

Chas Bacon Esq

Styford Hall

For the best brace of early cucumbers

11th April 1828”
