"Three Roses Art Nouveau Design"

-- Antique *  Monochrome Glaze * Majolica  --

Presenting a beautiful antique, Art Nouveau, tile, by H & R Johnson, Ltd, which features a floral design of three Roses with a delightfully asymmetric stem that greatly contributes to the tile breaking away from Victorian formality of expression.

Made of dust-pressed clay, using a hand operated tile press, the design is embossed into the clay, dried, and then coated with a rich, translucent, Emerald Green, monochrome, glaze, and then fired in a massive "bottle" kiln.

The extremely high temperatures of the kiln converts the applied glaze into a fine coating of brilliant, colored, glass, which is impervious to just about everything...save being struck by hard objects, such as a fireplace tool, which this tile luckily avoided its entire, long, life.

Condition: Excellent

The tile presents well and its design is fully intact and without wear. The tile is free of any manufacturer's defect.  What one sees is exactly what was intended by the tile's creator.

The verso displays a biscuit darkened by the smoke from an English fireplace, where this tile probably spent its entire life as part of a fireplace surround.

The grip pattern is typical of H & R Johnson tiles of this period.  One will find it embossed with, "H&R JOHNSON,LTD" ;   "ENGLAND" ; and a Design Registration Number.

This design is from 1908 and was copyrighted by the manufacturer.
