This is a black scorpion encased in some kind of clear resin or acrylic. The scorpion takes up the whole of the domed shape, with the tail curled over the body in typical scorpion fashion. The large pincers and splayed legs are clearly visible against a white base, which contrasts nicely against the black body of the critter and lets you see all the detail well. 

A very nice object for the scorpion lovers among us, which regrettably does not include my mother, for whom this was purchased by my father, for some reason that escapes me. Hence the sale of this otherwise new item, which comes in the original box.
