Vintage Handmade
Native American Indian Afghan Throw Blanket Lodge Cabin Décor
I was very fortunate to have recently been able to
purchase three very fine vintage Hand Made Afghan Blankets or Throws at a local Raleigh, NC Estate Tag Sale and this is one of
them.
I purchased these from the daughter in law of the Crocheter.
She told me they were most likely crafted some forty or fifty years ago but
everything still remain bright and brilliant, even after all these years, as
they have never been used or even displayed and have been safely stored in a hope
chest type trunk in her bedroom.
I am far from an expert on items like this and actually have
very limited experience with them but I will provide for you with an honest and
thorough evolution of this item.
Crafted
by someone with obvious superior skills it should be difficult if not
impossible to find any of the many irregularities
that most all hand crocheted items like this usually have.
Now don’t get me wrong it is a handmade item so I guess if you
look hard enough you might find a miniscule flaw here or there but to be
completely honest I looked this over carefully on both sides and then examined
it again thoroughly using a bright light and was unable to find anything that I
would consider to be a flaw of any kind.
I would guess that if your compare this offering with any other similar
ones available on eBay I believe the differences will be easily noticeable.
This fantastic hand knit throw
or blanket features an Indian Chief in headdress as the central point of this
extremely well crafted piece flanked by Thunderbirds and other American Indian
symbols.
Directly on each side of the chief are arrows which are symbols
that are believed to provide protection.
On each side of the arrows are Thunderbirds which are a bearer of
happiness.
Below the Thunderbirds are two arrows. The arrow pointing
left symbolizes fending off enemies while the one pointing right is for
protection against evil spirits.
Arrowheads are also known to be symbol of alertness.
Along with excellent quality, detail, and workmanship this
was done in the best combination of colors that I have seen on an afghan with
this type of theme.
The colors are black, white, and red, with a little
yellow and turquoise highlights and lastly the artist even got the difficult to
match facial tone spot on.
Some of things you might want to look out for when
evaluating a crocheted afghan for purchase are as follows…
Look for color consistency of the thread. Many novice or less experienced
embroiderers will underestimate the amount of any particular color needed to
complete the project. Trying to match a particular shade is many times all but
impossible because it’s more than likely from a different lot and therefore
most likely going to be a noticeably different shade of color. Make sure you look
closely at all of the images any seller provides because it’s fairly easy to
spot this common error when you know what you’re looking for it.
Look at the back side of items for uniform tightness in the
stitching and look for additional signs of quality work as well as overall
signs of lack of quality workmanship. The back is where flaws will try to be
masked. Many signs of inferior workmanship will be obvious here.
Look closely around any fringed borders. Many crafters use the
fringe to mask otherwise noticeable edge flaws and honestly edge fringing
really just adds a cheapness to what might be an otherwise be a quality piece.
The knowledgeable crafts person intentionally forgoes the addition of any
fringe on their work.
The approximate measurements are 54” by 47” and this is a very
heavy item weighing over three pounds before
packing.
This item is every bit as nice as the images would indicate and
actually may even nicer.
See last four photos
for close-up images of the backside.
I have provided numerous images that should also be
considered part of my description. Please examine these images carefully as
they will assist you in making a better informed decision.
I am selling this
item as I sell all of my items…
AS IS and I DO NOT
ACCEPT RETURNS.
I shoot some of my
images using continuous lighting and some using a flash. I also use post
photography editing software to further adjust for lighting conditions so you
may notice slight variations from image to image in both color and brightness.
I post the images that I feel best represent the item. I believe this will assist
you in making a better informed judgment.
Your throw will be
expertly packed to insure a safe arrival to your location. It will be shipped
out to you by Priority Mail and my items are always insured to provide an
additional level of protection. It will be boxed rather
than simply thrown in a Mylar bag as has become so common place today.
Due to the ever
changing, almost impossible to calculate, shipping charges of the US Post
Office along with the Insane Customs Forms I am only able to ship to the lower
48 states.
