Lea & Boulton, Limited, Tunstall, England - c1908

"Wild, Art Nouveau, Floral"

-- Antique * Poly-Chrome * Majolica  --

"An excellent condition, embossed, majolica, created by Lea & Boulton of Tunstall, England, c1908, featuring a wild floral relief design, coated in brilliant, poly-chrome, glaze."

This tile displays a Green, almost organic, Art Nouveau inspired design, which frames the central,  wildly flowing, flower head, with its crimson glazed stamen, wrapped by its detailed green petals.

Condition: Excellent

The tile presents well and its design is fully intact and without rubs or wear.  The wonderful survival of this tile is the result of it being used in a furniture backsplash, and not as part of an English fireplace surround.

The verso is clean of any soot stains and traces of mortar, but is still slightly grubby from its contact with a wood backing, and a hundred years of being cleaned with vinegar.

The verso displays a distinctive bar grip pattern, which is embossed with the letters "L.T.", which stand for James Hewitt Lea and Frank Dunning Boulton, who founded the Tunstall Tileries, Stoke on Trent, in the 1890s.

This is an original antique tile in its original, as found, condition.
