This is a new Davis Brothers knife, a Wood Carving Small detail Knife. It is a new edition and was designed for a special customer who carves decoys. He suggested we name this series the Willy's Whittler after an old friend and gifted carver. This new series of the WW will come in one of four blade lengths (S , M, L and XL) This pattern has a curved, scalpel like shape that produces a special slicing cut, This is really a handy knife with a striking Curly Maple handle that feels great in the hand. This knife was hand forged by a carver, for carvers, right here on the Pacific Northwest Coast. Davis Bros., well known for high quality hand forged NW Coast style woodcarving tools, will make a limited number of some favorites. We make a wide selection of Crook or Crooked knives, Detail knives and Hook knives, as well as Chip Carving and Whittling knives. Detail knives are used in accompaniment with crook knives, as well as chip carving and other stock removal knives.
SAFETY FIRST! : This blade is extremely sharp. Please use caution when removing from the package. Always be aware of where you are cutting, and do not put hands, fingers or other parts of your body in the path of the blade. Always wear a cut-resistant carving glove on the hand not holding the knife. And please keep this knife safely away from children.
WORKMANSHIP: Each knife is unique and hand crafted, with no automated processes used in the more than 30 machining, forging and woodworking tasks for each one. Some very fine tool marks may be visible on the knives. I do not attain absolute machinelike perfection, but strive to combine art, beauty and utility. The look and feel of this tool when held is beautiful, smooth, and inspires the work at hand.
BLADE: It was made using 1095 high carbon blade steel, ground to shape then forged, refined and hardened. It was then tempered to keep a durable, keen edge and is extremely sharp. The blade profile has a slight curvature along the cutting edge which makes it relatively easy to sharpen.
HANDLE: The handle is Curly Maple, with a light blonde color and intricate swirling and iridescent grain patterns. Maple is a traditional handle wood here on the Northwest coast, hard and very tough. It is finished with hand rubbed natural Shellac and Carnauba wax, a very durable finish that highlights the beauty of the wood. This handle fits neatly into the hand, allowing fine control.
CONSTRUCTION: This knife is 6 1/4" overall, with a 1 5/8" long blade that is 3/8" wide before tapering to a point. The cutting edge is curved overall and upswept at the tip and has a scalpel-like shape. The blade is set with epoxy and further secured with two bronze rivets.
CARVING CHARACTERISTICS: This knife will be so handy it will end up on your workbench most of the time. The curvature of the edge allows smooth curves to be cut while incising and slicing, and It is ideal for carving and whittling in the round. This knife has a special slicing ability with the scalpel like shape. With a double bevel edge, this knife can be used with either hand, and cuts well either pushing or pulling. The blade has plenty of strength for these tasks, but should not be used for prying. For best performance, when sharpening this tool both sides should be sharpened.
