"Rincewind with Lifetimer" #13 of 50
Just added 2 photos of recent actual cels at the end to give you a better idea.
Purchase Includes:
- An original pencil animation drawing, by Hanna Barbera studios, stamped with the Perfect 10 Productions company seal.
- A hand-painted colour animation cel of the pencil drawing.
- A pair of new white cotton gloves (men's large) will be included to handle the animation Cel as they are delicate and scratches should be avoided.
- An industry standard AMCE 3 pin peg bar, affixed to white art foamboard, will be used to ship the frames to you. This can be removed and reused for final presentation if desired (affixed with double-sided tape).
- The paper animation frame will be placed onto the peg par on the board first.
- A second clear acetate animation sheet will be placed on top of the paper frame to protect from any paint transfer from the Cel.
- The Painted Cel will be placed on top of the clear sheet.
- A wax-finished protective brown paper sheet will be placed on top of the animation Cel to protect the side which had the ink drawn
- See photos for more details. The last 4 pictures show the layers used for packaging the frame and Cel safely for shipping.
Frame number 13 of 50 "Rincewind with Lifetimer"
Any initial colour images marked "draft only" were just to test to test colours and are not as well finished as the final product. See the photos of the colour cel of Binky for an example of the final quality.
1st full frame paper image is from the actual frame/image you will receive.
History
Over 20,000 hand drawn frames were hand-drawn for Terry Pratchett's second Discworld Game, by the famous Hanna Barbera Animation studios, at a cost of over a million pounds.
Some frames had loads of characters, and some were single characters. A huge number of the frames were just bits and pieces of characters and were discarded. Most of the remainder were stamped with the Perfect 10 Productions company seal.
Among the 2 boxes kept of this treasure trove, there were just over 60 sequential drawings of Rincewind the Wizzard filling a lifetimer with sand from the fountain of youth. A few of these Rincewind frames have been sold separately over the years, but I always felt the remainder needed special treatment.
ORDER
- You are ordering one of a very limited collection of 50 (maximum) animation frames, with matching hand-painted animation Cel, similar to the one shown. Once they are gone, they are gone. The drawings are all originals.
- Frame numbers will be issued in the order of purchase, starting with numbers 11-20 in this listing. The frames will be sold based on the order they were originally drawn and stored. The paper frame will be hand-numbered in pencil ("11/30" etc) while the animation Cel will the number written in Cel ink at the bottom left corner (matching the frame number of course).
- All pencil drawings are slightly different, and will be shown as the first paper image.
- All these drawings have Rincewind facing the camera while filling and/or closing the lifetimer. As you can see they are highly detailed.
- Rincewind is positioned in the middle of the animation frame, as shown on the example pencil drawings. This makes them perfect for display.
- The animation frames are the original pencil drawing, by Hanna Barbera studios in the late 1990's, on standard F12 animation paper.
- A professional Cel animator (who used to paint Cels decades ago, before the world went digital) has been commissioned to hand-paint the matching coloured animation Cels.
- Individually these would take over 6 hours each to produce, so the only way we can afford this manual process is to have them paint multiple, similar coloured, frames at the same time (e.g. one colour at a time on multiple Cels, then repeat for each different colour). Each coat takes at least 30 minutes to dry. Some Discworld Cels require up to 10 different colours.
- The coloured animation Cels are on industry standard sized cellulose sheets with industry standard registration marks
- The coloured animation Cels are painted using rather expensive vinyl paints, specifically created for Cel animation. These paints now only appear to be made by a single UK company. On request we can let you know exactly what you would need to paint Cels yourself, but the total cost of equipment and materials is well over £500 (not to mention a lot of practice and a very steady hand).
- The painting process requires multiple coats of vinyl paint. It is a very labour intensive process, so please bear that in mind.
- Once all 10 of these frames have sold, we will list numbers 21-30. Once they are all sold we will list the final batch of numbers 1-10.
Notes:
- Any images marked "Draft only" are not the final quality you can expect. These were produced to test the colours and suitability of the images for Cel painting.
- A few of the required colours are not available as stock, but the Cel artist we are using is skilled at colour mixing. This should mean all 10 frames in this batch are very similar colours to each other, but we have to allow for later batches varying very slightly.
- The animation frames and Cel are suitable for framing, but special care must be taken with the framing of animation Cels. Please seek professional assistance to avoid long-term damage to these delicate one-off pieces of art.
- Minor defects on the paper frames (faint creasing or other handling marks) can be expected due to the handling during production of the game (a paper feeding scanner was used). They have since then been safely stored flat for over 25 years.
- Please do handle with care on the receiving end as Cel acetate sheets can scratch easily. White cotton gloves recommended for handling (and are supplied).
Frame History:
- There were around 20,000 original pencil drawings commissioned from Hanna Barbera for Discworld II "Missing presumed?" (called Discworld II "Mortality Bytes" in the USA). I was the lead developer on the first two Discworld games, so I was able to purchase the entire lot of animation frames after the completion of the second game (and spent the following months sorting through them). Side note: The first Discworld game used only pixel drawings, so no animation frames exist for that one.
- Of the 20,000 frames, only a few thousand frames were usable, as standalone images, as most frames were only parts of animations and were discarded. Most of the remaining frames were stamped with the Perfect 10 Productions company seal to confirm they were genuinely from the game.
- Side note: Many smaller images were kept, and may be listed later, but were not deemed worthy of stamping at the time (using a company seal 1000's of times to emboss paper is very painful and time was limited).
Shipping:
- The frames have been carefully stored for over 25 years, and handling has been kept to a minimum. The acetate Cels have only been handled using white cotton gloves (by the Cel artist and us).
- They will be shipped in a well padded box, mounted on a pegbar and foam board as specified, to avoid any Cel paint transferring to the paper frames or ink rubbing off the top surface.
